Five thousand years ago with the invention of writing the human race took its first jump towards a technological civilization in today's world, Technology is constantly changing and advancing at the speed of light. Is impressive to think that only a few decades ago cell phones didn’t exist, people used to communicate by phone or by other ways like letters or messages. Now cell phones are considered almost outdated. Our days we have blackberries, i-phones, etc. This situation happens with many other technological objects that make our lives easier and faster. But not everyone have access to these technological advances because they are very expensive. This is a serious problem for students for example. Now almost all the information is in the web. All the useful websites, images, programs are on the Internet. It’s very unfair that not everyone can make use of them because they don’t have a computer or because they don’t have an Internet connection.
I’m studying in the "Universidad de Chile", one of the few public universities in Santiago. Is public because it’s administrating by the state and not by private companies as the private universities. Is expected that the budget for technology be reduced. This is my situation like a student of the medicine college. Every day I have to deal with this problem.
As I said on a previous blog, we have a real problem with the computers, especially with those who are in the library. They just don’t work appropriately. We have to spend a lot of time searching a computer that works decently and also the ones who are available. Find those two things is very difficult. My career and all the careers of my college demand a lot of time for study. Every day thousands of students have to prepare different works for there classes. We have put all our effort in those works to comply with the requirements of the university. We can’t spend time on computers that don’t work properly.
But as future health professionals we will need to use along our carrier and profession a lot and varied technological objects. It’s probably that in our first days of practice we have to work in establishments with fewer resources that the ones we have in the university nowadays. We will have to use more "primitive" instruments, and we must be able to adapt ourselves to those technological changes.
It’s true that technology is growing quickly. But now the question is: All the people in the country are available to participate of the technology advances? I can certainly say that the answer is NO. Technology help us to have an easier and faster life. It also helps to optimize our time. It´s a very important and necessary thing in this stress world so, what is the reason because so many people is not participating of this technology progress? Technology is a source of opportunities. If we use it properly many doors could be opened for our personal progress.

Challenges in my discipline

Today I have to talk about important chllenges that my discipline, Obstetrics, is currently facing, specifically about technology, social matters and education.
Midwives needs many technological objects, like instruments to take the pressure, stethoscopes to detect heart beats, ultrasound to listen the baby, etc. It is necessary that these instruments be modern, they have to be renewed over time. The technology advances are progressing very fast, so the health facilities need to keep up with these advances to provide better care to the patients. However, many health facilities don´t have the necessary resources to afford these instruments, so they can´t progress in technology matters and reach an improvement with the patient´s health. The government has to deal with this problem NOW.
If we talk about social matters and education in Obstetrics, we have to mention the lack of interest that the society, specially the young people, have in the matters related with sexuality, specially in the prevention and sexual education. Most of young pepople prefer doing other staff of their own interest than going to talks and seminars about this theme. This is one reason why there are so many teen parents that have to leave their studies to work and get some money to care they baby, but the biggest problem is that this situation usually happens to people with fewer resources, WHY?....easy, becouse they don´t have money to buy good and reliable condoms, to go to the gynecologist for a check, to acces to a good educaction.
That´s why our rol as future health professionals is so important, we have to create new and more interesting methods of sexual education, so that the young people have interest in this mathers, also the government has to invest in education.
Midwives must be appreciated in its educational role, they have to acquire the necessary tools to be excellent professionals.

As I said in previous blogs, I´m studying Obstetrics in the "Universidad de Chile" , I´m in my first year. This univesity is one of the most prestigious in the country, I don´t say that only because I´m studying here, but because it´s true.

My faculty is very large, it has more than three floors, with many corridors, different patios, a huge library of five floors, a cafeteria, a square that we call " La Blest" and many many auditoriums and classrooms.

Inside, the university looks like a hospital, most of the walls are white or gray, this faculty is very old and it´s not hard to notice.

If I have to choose one of the things that urgently needs improvement are the computers in general, specially those who are in the library. Here I can talk about a few points, like the amount, they are very few, specially if you consider the number of students. Another point is the quality, most of them don´t work properly, they also are very slow.

To use the computer you must enter a password that you previously have to ask to the librarian. I can say with certainty that , on average, out of four passwords I had requested, only one worked.

This situation is a problem that we must consider as students, itñs not acceptable that bad computers affects our study and efficiency, specially for people like me that don´t have a notebook, netbook or something like that.

A few months ago we make a list with our signatures requesting new computers, we collected hundreds of signatures, but nothing happens...so I ask myself, ¿ What are they waiting for?

I really think that having hobbies is fundamental for our life, they help us to develop our personality in different areas, like dancing, singing, painting, acting, etc. They also facilitate our interaction with others.
I personally have many hobbies, one of them is to dance. I have been in many dance classes, in 2007 I practiced flamenco, at an academy near my house. I took these classes only one semester, but I learned a lot, such as how to dance upright, to show feelings when I´m dancing to relate with others and to be concentrated to the teacher instructions.
The second half of this year I was in contemporary dance classes at my school, but I didn´t like it very much, they were a little boring. This year I´m in salsa and merengue classes in my university, today I had my salsa test, I think I did well, I have to wait for the mark.
Besides dancing I really like singing, I´ve participated in two musicals at my school and in one singing festival. I haven´t much personality to sing in public, but the experience in my school help me to have less shameand daring yo interact with the public.
I´m a big fun of theater, and this year I had the great opportunity to take classes in the university, I really enjoy it!!
Now I´m dedicated to crafts, I´m doing fabric flowers for my cousin´s marriage , the best part in that my aunt paid me for each flower that I make.
I intend to continue doing other things besides study, either dancing, singingacting, etc. I can say that to develop aour hobbies help us to develop ourselves.

holiday destinations

If someone ask me about places that I would like to go in the future...I would say to him or her that actually, I want to know every place of this giant and beautiful world!. But I must be realistic, as the sayin goes: dreaming is free.
For this summer holidays I have a big project, with a group of friends want to travel to Perú and Bolivia, both South America countries. But like I sayed before, it´s a project, we have to solve a few problems, like the minimum money we have to gather to have a pleasant trip, or select the group of people who would go, because there are many interested friends, and this type of trip wouldn´t work with a very large group of people.
I really hopes that this trip functions, the only country I know, besides mine of course, is Argentina, specifically the city of Mendoza..I want to know another places!. I want to go to Perú and Bolivia for many reasons: both are near fron Chile, so the trip will be short and cheap, I also think that the culture, including food, clothing, arts are very interesting and I really want to know Machu Pichu, an ancient Inca town in the south of Perú.
I have to say that Chile is also a beautiful country, last summer holidays I went to Chiloé, a very big island in the South. I went there with a friend and her sister, and we stayed in a beatiful wooden house of my friend´s grandmother. We went to many places, we ate typical food, sailed on a boat, and we enjoy the wonderful scenery.
I also want to go in this summer holidays to the beach with my friends. Last summer I went to Reñaca with my school´s friends, we had a great time!.
Another place that I really want to go, hopefuly soon, is Italy. Like I sayed in a past blog, my last name is from Italy : "di Girolamo", a few yars ago my father did the paperwork to acquire the nationality, so now, I´m a citizen of Italy. I also have family there, the only and big problem is that it´s very expensive to go there.
I think it´s good to have projects and dreams, how knows, mabye they come true.

Today I´m going to talk about an article taked from a website called guardian.co.uk, I searched information about my career, Obstetrics. The article that I choose it´s called " Sleeping with my baby (maybe) saved his life" , writed today by Emily Wilson.
She talks about her experience with her son Aron, he was born last year, five weeks premature.
The baby had to be a few days in the hospital becouse his condition, after this time he was able to go home with his mother. Here, the two of them shared a double bed, Aron sleeps with his head in the crook of Emily´s arm, really close each other. Becouse of this they were very connected, Emily could feel his baby and to perceive if something was wrong.
One thay Aron stops breathing, His mother immediately felt this in her dream, she woke up and hooked the baby over one shoulder, then he started breathing again.
The next day Emily took the baby to the hospital, doctors said that nothing was wrong with Aron and also they sayed to the mother that sleeping with a baby was dangerous. Emily knew that, but this time, with her second son Aron, she decided to follow her mother instinct and to heighten the precious connection with Aron.
Like Emily says, this finally is what probably saved her baby´s life.

In this blog I have to write about Santiago, the city where I was born and in which I have lived all my life. Despite the contamination of the capital of Chile, the smog and the polluted air, Santiago is a beautifull city, we have to use our time to know the impressive places and landscapes.
A place that I definitely recommend to visit is " El Santuario de la Naturaleza". It´s located in Los Andes mountain range, near the sky centers. The road to get there is a little danger becouse of the curves of the street, but it´s worth it. It´s a place in which the human intervention is minimal, the snowmelt runs in the slopes of the mountains forming little gaps of very cold water.
You can make a three days walk to get to a glacier, you have to go with tent and provisions.
Another place that I recommend to visit is The San Cristobal Mountain, the highest point of the city after the Renca mountain. You can get to the top in a cablecar, but I think that it´s not recomended to peolple with vertigo. Also, in this mountain is the Metropolitan zoo and two pools, calls Tupahue and Antilén.
If you want to know where our president governs, you have to go to La Moneda, in the center of Santiago. In the North is the " Constitution square" and in the South the "Citizenship square", also, inside "La Moneda" is "El patio de los naranjos", with beatiful orange trees.
If you want to go dancing or to a pub, I recommendo you " the Bellavista neighborhood", there you can find a lot of pubs, clubs and restorants for all tastes.
If you are a lover of theater, ballet and classic music, the place for you it´s the " Teatro Municipal" a beautifull building built in 1857.
I hope you visit Santiago soon!

The Transantiago system is definitely a theme very commented and criticized between the people of Santiago.
To compare the old with the new transportation we must take into account a few points, one of these is the cost. In this days, if you don´t have an student pass, you have to pay a big ammount of money in compare with the old system, but a good thing in this point is that the way of paying now is a lot easier and requires less time. You have to use a BIP! card charged with money instead of pay to the driver with coins.
Becouse of these the delinquency has decreased, the offenders has no longer money to steal, and also the passengers can travel calmer.
A bad thing is that the cover of the buses is very limited, and most of the time I have to take more than one bus to reach my destination, for example, to get from the university to my house I have to take two buses and the subway, sometimes this take me like one hour and a half.
But I can´t say that my experience is bad, I didn´t use a lot the old transport system, so now I´m very used to the new one.
Have been many campaigns to improve this system, some of theme have worked and some do not. I think that an important thing that we can do is to be tolerant and patient, and complain only when is necessary, the authorities also have to do their part, they have to take into account our needs and make more campaigns to keep improving Transantiago.

Hello!!, first of all sorry for my absence last Friday, I was in Santa Cruz, a city a few ours from Santiago. Today, after a long time, I´m back to talk about travelling and places that I will like to visit some day.

I have traveled only to Argentina, to Mendoza specifically, and to the North and South of Chile, so I can say that I don´t know almost anything of our huge world.

A country that I really want to visit, hopefully soon, is Italy. My grandfather was born in the South of this beautifull country, and all my uncles including my father speak italian. Also, a brother of my grandfather still lives there.

A few years ago mi father did the necessary paperwork to acquire the italian nationality for me and all my brothers, so naw I can say that I´m chilean and also italian, I can live ther if I want, the only problem is the money, it´s very expensive to travel there.

I really like the culture of Italy, is a country where art has a big value, great painters, sculptors, musicians, had born there. The architectures is beautifull, and the food is delicius, I´m a big fan of pasta and all its variations.

If I go there, I will visit museums, the places where my grandfather grew, I will eat a lot of pasta and pizza, and if it´s possible I will like to go to the stadium to see good quality football. I also will like to visit my frandfather´s brother, and maybe I could stay in his house some days.

If I go soon I will like to finish my studies there, in some University, or maybe go to do a master or a post graduate course, and maybe, how knows, I could stay there to live.

My blogging experience

Every Friday, after my theater class I have to go to the computer room of the university to make a new blog for my english class, each day about a different topic. As you probably have noticed if you are reading this, I have had to write about my ideal job, my university, my career, my future, my self, etc. And trough this make known my tastes, my life, my family and many aspects about me and my life.
My favourit tipic on wich I had to write, was about the picture we have to describe, becouse it shows a realy important and different aspect in my life that many people don´t know.
Today, I have to write my last blog, I have to talk about my blogging experenience.
At this hour, on Fridays, the truth is that I´m very tired form a log week of study, tests, getting up early, and very little sleep. I´m not very lucid to write things that requires a lot of concentration and dedication. Also, the time for endindg the writing is very reduced, and most of the time I have to make it very hurry to leave on time.
But not everithing about blogs is negative, I can´t deny that with my bloggin experience, my knoledge of english, especialy my writing have imporved considerably, my vocabulary has been expanded, and now I can write more fluent.
Also, the atmosphere between the students and the teacher is very nice, and I realy enjoy it, I had the opportunity to know new people, great people I have to say.
As conclusion, I can say that the disadventages of blogging in the Englis class, as I sayed before, are the schedule and the time, and the adventages, all the improvement in my english knoledge and the atmosphere of work.
Now, it´s time to say goodbye!..

Ken Robinson in his talk raises the idea that at the present time the schools are killing creativity in their students.

He founded this idea by saying that education given in schools tend to develop only certain areas in the students, like languaje, history, science and mathematics, and that other areas like music, arts or dance are neglected. Clearly this is a problem, acording to Robinson the intelligence has three features: is diverse, dynamic and distinctive, this means that each person in particular has a particular type of intelligence and that there is no intelligence more important than the other.

People tends to stigmatises these more humanistic areas, and do not let the students develop this skills, prohibited form doing what they want.

Also an other factor is that schools do not give room for mistakes, and show them like the worst thing in the world; this is why children are afraid of making mistakes. Robinson says that if you aren´t prepared to fail, you wouldn´t be an original person, with identity.

We have a mision, we must be aware of all these aspect of education and make something better, we have to promote human imagination and not let education kill them.

I´m studying Obstetrics, so when I finish university I want to be dedicated on one of the specialties in my area, I´m not going to study five long years in one of the most difficult univerities of Chile, and meaby in the world, for anything.

I realy like the issue of health and to treat with people, to be helpful and useful and have all the instruments and facilities to even save a life, I think that is one of the most rewarding things in the world.

I will like to work far away from Santiago, like I sayed in the previous blog, maybe in Chiloè and travel island by aisland attending future mothers and all the people who need my services. An other option is to work in Santiago, mi brother moved recently to that city, so I wouldn´t be so alone. If I have the possibility to work in a different country I wouldnt think twice. I think it´s very interesting to know different cultures and to larn from other people different from you.

I don´t think it will be difficult to find this job in the future, when I finish my years at university I´m sure that I will be prepared to be a great midwife, for this I have to continue being a studious and responsible person, and develop myself in different areas, also I have to be prepared to treat with all kind of people, so I will need to be a very patient and tolerant woman

viernes, 12 de junio de 2009

This is my fifth month at university, I´m just starting my years here, so I have not had the possibility to know many subjects.

Until now, my favourite is embriology, it´s the most recent unit of one of the most important subjects this semester.

The course is divided into several groups and each one has a professor in charge. Personally I have to teachers. On Monday is Marcela Fuenzalida and on Thursday Mariana Rojas, she next to Miguel Concha are the teachers in charge of the subject.

I like it becouse is directly related with my career and my future as a professional, it´s very interesting to know and see how the baby develops inside the womb of the mother, we all went through the same prosseses, so it´s very important for all of us to know how we become people that we are now.

This semester I have learnt many thigs related with the babies, like the stages of development, the growth process and the heart, face and the limbs development

My future

It´s impossible to know what the future has prepared me, but what I know is what I will like to be doing 5 years from now.

I see my self graduated from Obstetrics, full of knowledge and instruments to be a great professional.

At first I will like to work in a hospital, I don´t have any preferences now about what specific hospital.

I´m not realy a big fan of the capital, so I will like to be living in another city of Chile, like Concepción, Valdivia or even the big island of Chiloé, and be of help to people that maybe don´t have the resources and the knoledge to be treated in my area.

Another possibility is to live in a different country like Italy, I have the nationality, so I have a lot of facilities to make a life there.

Personally I don´t see my self married in 5 years and with no children. If I live in the south I will like to have a wood house, with a big yard, animals, a great view and a big fireplace to get warm. I don´t like to be alone, so I hope that my family or friends visit me constantly.

viernes, 5 de junio de 2009

I really don´t know many people who are closely related with my career and area, but in my university experience I have had the opportunity to know a few teachers, doctors, health professionals and students that I admire for their experience, knowledge, effort and achievements.

One of this persons is Mariana Rojas Rauco, she is a veterinary graduated form Universidad de Chile at 1975,but she specialized in embriology. Also she is a teacher at my university, specifically in the developmental biology and anatomy program, and I have the luck to have classes with her. Also she has a lot of projects approved in FONDECYT, a nacional commission of cientific and technological investigacion.

But I think that a good prefessional it´s not only masured by their achievemnts or knowledge, Mariana Rojas it´s also a very charismatic and warm person, and a great teacher, features that I could evidence as her student.

This year I enter to " Univesidad de Chile" to study Obstetrics and Puericulture. The truth is that my first option when I postulate after the results of " PSU" was enfermery, but the scores increased and I can´t enter to that carrer. But like the saying says...everyhing happens for a reason.
I choose that carrers becouse I think that I have a spirit of service, I like to treat with people and help them with the instruments and tools that my carrer will give me in the future, all of this focused in the area of the health.
The role of the matron is very diverse and includes many areas, he or she has to educate, prevent, promote and report to people, specially to women during their pregnancy and labour.
Obstetrics has three specialities: Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Puericulture, in the future I want to be dedicated to Gynaecology, but I´m not sure yet
In the future, a professional in my area has to be a very patient person, with a marked vacation of service, very dedicated to what he or she does and has to handle all the concepts and things that are necessary to be a great professional.

This is a very important photo for me. It shows me at the left, Margarita besides me and Luz Marina, Jennifer, Saray, Marcela and Antonia below me.

It was taken for a friend betwen Christmas and new year of 2008, in the garden of a very big pool in Huechuraba (an area of Santiago).

In the summer I went to a voluntary activity called "Colonias de Verano".We were a group of thirty volunteers between 18 and 24 years old, all from different carrers, universities and interests, but we were all reunited for a common cause: to entertain, attend and take care a group of childrens of La Pintana, also an aera of Santiago. We took them to different parts, for example to de zoo, the swimming pool ( like it´s shown in the picture), the cinema, the electronics games, etc.

The girls that appear in the photo are the girls that I had to take care for all a week, all of them were form La Pintana. It was a really greatfull and beautifull experience for me and my girls, in wich everyone learned something about the other and in wich I definitely grew as a person.

See you soon!

Hello!
Today I will talk about a very important carrer-related web-site for me, the famous auladigital.
I don´t visit web-sites which are related with my carrer very often, only when it´s necessary to see my marks and make specific works. Even those, every day I have to look http://www.auladigital.med.uchile.cl/, a web-site in which I can see all my signatures, the marks of my quizes and tests, the recent events of university, students material, etc. Also you can upload things, like texts or information.
This page is very important for all the students of my carrer, it´s all there and teachers use it to be comunicated with us.
I found this site in the first days of classes becouse a teacher told us about it, now I can say that I become an auladigital-depender.
Like I sayed before, I have to visit it every day to see my future classes and find information. I realy don´t like the fact of dedicate a lot of time of the day in reviewing the web site, but It´s a very good and easy way to be comunicated and informed whith all the related things about my carrer.
That´s all for now,see you!

I’m not a really big fan of technology, but I can’t deny that it’s very useful, specially in this years.
My favorite piece of technology is my computer, really it’s not only mine, I have to share it with my sister.
It’s very old, we have got it about ten years ago. It was a gift from my uncle.
When I was in school I use it only to chat with my friends, check my e- mail and made some works. Now that I’m in University I have to use it every day, whit no exception, to check my e-mail, to see the classes, and most important check the "digital aula", a program that shows my marks and works.
I like it because it’s a very useful tool. You can find a lot of information about specific subjects, also you can use programs for different proposes, like Power Point, Photoshop, Word, etc. It’s great to communicate with your friends through Messenger or Facebook.
Now that I have it, it’s hard to imagine a life without it. I will have to dedicate more time to look information in books or magazines. In my free time, I will have to find another things to do, like read, make manual things or even cook. But I think in a certain way, it will be a good thing, because I will develop my self in different areas. Also I will expend more time doing sports and outside activities, wich is good for my body and for my mind.

I realy like singing, in fact,I paticipated in three musicals of my school a few years ago. I also like dancing, I were in flamenco and modern dance classes.

I think it´s very important to learn another languaje besides spanish, specially english...the universal languaje. In the future it will be very usefull for me as a professional.

That´s all for now, see you soon!!
