Five thousand years ago with the invention of writing the human race took its first jump towards a technological civilization in today's world, Technology is constantly changing and advancing at the speed of light. Is impressive to think that only a few decades ago cell phones didn’t exist, people used to communicate by phone or by other ways like letters or messages. Now cell phones are considered almost outdated. Our days we have blackberries, i-phones, etc. This situation happens with many other technological objects that make our lives easier and faster. But not everyone have access to these technological advances because they are very expensive. This is a serious problem for students for example. Now almost all the information is in the web. All the useful websites, images, programs are on the Internet. It’s very unfair that not everyone can make use of them because they don’t have a computer or because they don’t have an Internet connection.
I’m studying in the "Universidad de Chile", one of the few public universities in Santiago. Is public because it’s administrating by the state and not by private companies as the private universities. Is expected that the budget for technology be reduced. This is my situation like a student of the medicine college. Every day I have to deal with this problem.
As I said on a previous blog, we have a real problem with the computers, especially with those who are in the library. They just don’t work appropriately. We have to spend a lot of time searching a computer that works decently and also the ones who are available. Find those two things is very difficult. My career and all the careers of my college demand a lot of time for study. Every day thousands of students have to prepare different works for there classes. We have put all our effort in those works to comply with the requirements of the university. We can’t spend time on computers that don’t work properly.
But as future health professionals we will need to use along our carrier and profession a lot and varied technological objects. It’s probably that in our first days of practice we have to work in establishments with fewer resources that the ones we have in the university nowadays. We will have to use more "primitive" instruments, and we must be able to adapt ourselves to those technological changes.
It’s true that technology is growing quickly. But now the question is: All the people in the country are available to participate of the technology advances? I can certainly say that the answer is NO. Technology help us to have an easier and faster life. It also helps to optimize our time. It´s a very important and necessary thing in this stress world so, what is the reason because so many people is not participating of this technology progress? Technology is a source of opportunities. If we use it properly many doors could be opened for our personal progress.

Challenges in my discipline

Today I have to talk about important chllenges that my discipline, Obstetrics, is currently facing, specifically about technology, social matters and education.
Midwives needs many technological objects, like instruments to take the pressure, stethoscopes to detect heart beats, ultrasound to listen the baby, etc. It is necessary that these instruments be modern, they have to be renewed over time. The technology advances are progressing very fast, so the health facilities need to keep up with these advances to provide better care to the patients. However, many health facilities don´t have the necessary resources to afford these instruments, so they can´t progress in technology matters and reach an improvement with the patient´s health. The government has to deal with this problem NOW.
If we talk about social matters and education in Obstetrics, we have to mention the lack of interest that the society, specially the young people, have in the matters related with sexuality, specially in the prevention and sexual education. Most of young pepople prefer doing other staff of their own interest than going to talks and seminars about this theme. This is one reason why there are so many teen parents that have to leave their studies to work and get some money to care they baby, but the biggest problem is that this situation usually happens to people with fewer resources, WHY?....easy, becouse they don´t have money to buy good and reliable condoms, to go to the gynecologist for a check, to acces to a good educaction.
That´s why our rol as future health professionals is so important, we have to create new and more interesting methods of sexual education, so that the young people have interest in this mathers, also the government has to invest in education.
Midwives must be appreciated in its educational role, they have to acquire the necessary tools to be excellent professionals.

As I said in previous blogs, I´m studying Obstetrics in the "Universidad de Chile" , I´m in my first year. This univesity is one of the most prestigious in the country, I don´t say that only because I´m studying here, but because it´s true.

My faculty is very large, it has more than three floors, with many corridors, different patios, a huge library of five floors, a cafeteria, a square that we call " La Blest" and many many auditoriums and classrooms.

Inside, the university looks like a hospital, most of the walls are white or gray, this faculty is very old and it´s not hard to notice.

If I have to choose one of the things that urgently needs improvement are the computers in general, specially those who are in the library. Here I can talk about a few points, like the amount, they are very few, specially if you consider the number of students. Another point is the quality, most of them don´t work properly, they also are very slow.

To use the computer you must enter a password that you previously have to ask to the librarian. I can say with certainty that , on average, out of four passwords I had requested, only one worked.

This situation is a problem that we must consider as students, itñs not acceptable that bad computers affects our study and efficiency, specially for people like me that don´t have a notebook, netbook or something like that.

A few months ago we make a list with our signatures requesting new computers, we collected hundreds of signatures, but nothing happens...so I ask myself, ¿ What are they waiting for?

I really think that having hobbies is fundamental for our life, they help us to develop our personality in different areas, like dancing, singing, painting, acting, etc. They also facilitate our interaction with others.
I personally have many hobbies, one of them is to dance. I have been in many dance classes, in 2007 I practiced flamenco, at an academy near my house. I took these classes only one semester, but I learned a lot, such as how to dance upright, to show feelings when I´m dancing to relate with others and to be concentrated to the teacher instructions.
The second half of this year I was in contemporary dance classes at my school, but I didn´t like it very much, they were a little boring. This year I´m in salsa and merengue classes in my university, today I had my salsa test, I think I did well, I have to wait for the mark.
Besides dancing I really like singing, I´ve participated in two musicals at my school and in one singing festival. I haven´t much personality to sing in public, but the experience in my school help me to have less shameand daring yo interact with the public.
I´m a big fun of theater, and this year I had the great opportunity to take classes in the university, I really enjoy it!!
Now I´m dedicated to crafts, I´m doing fabric flowers for my cousin´s marriage , the best part in that my aunt paid me for each flower that I make.
I intend to continue doing other things besides study, either dancing, singingacting, etc. I can say that to develop aour hobbies help us to develop ourselves.

holiday destinations

If someone ask me about places that I would like to go in the future...I would say to him or her that actually, I want to know every place of this giant and beautiful world!. But I must be realistic, as the sayin goes: dreaming is free.
For this summer holidays I have a big project, with a group of friends want to travel to Perú and Bolivia, both South America countries. But like I sayed before, it´s a project, we have to solve a few problems, like the minimum money we have to gather to have a pleasant trip, or select the group of people who would go, because there are many interested friends, and this type of trip wouldn´t work with a very large group of people.
I really hopes that this trip functions, the only country I know, besides mine of course, is Argentina, specifically the city of Mendoza..I want to know another places!. I want to go to Perú and Bolivia for many reasons: both are near fron Chile, so the trip will be short and cheap, I also think that the culture, including food, clothing, arts are very interesting and I really want to know Machu Pichu, an ancient Inca town in the south of Perú.
I have to say that Chile is also a beautiful country, last summer holidays I went to Chiloé, a very big island in the South. I went there with a friend and her sister, and we stayed in a beatiful wooden house of my friend´s grandmother. We went to many places, we ate typical food, sailed on a boat, and we enjoy the wonderful scenery.
I also want to go in this summer holidays to the beach with my friends. Last summer I went to Reñaca with my school´s friends, we had a great time!.
Another place that I really want to go, hopefuly soon, is Italy. Like I sayed in a past blog, my last name is from Italy : "di Girolamo", a few yars ago my father did the paperwork to acquire the nationality, so now, I´m a citizen of Italy. I also have family there, the only and big problem is that it´s very expensive to go there.
I think it´s good to have projects and dreams, how knows, mabye they come true.

Today I´m going to talk about an article taked from a website called guardian.co.uk, I searched information about my career, Obstetrics. The article that I choose it´s called " Sleeping with my baby (maybe) saved his life" , writed today by Emily Wilson.
She talks about her experience with her son Aron, he was born last year, five weeks premature.
The baby had to be a few days in the hospital becouse his condition, after this time he was able to go home with his mother. Here, the two of them shared a double bed, Aron sleeps with his head in the crook of Emily´s arm, really close each other. Becouse of this they were very connected, Emily could feel his baby and to perceive if something was wrong.
One thay Aron stops breathing, His mother immediately felt this in her dream, she woke up and hooked the baby over one shoulder, then he started breathing again.
The next day Emily took the baby to the hospital, doctors said that nothing was wrong with Aron and also they sayed to the mother that sleeping with a baby was dangerous. Emily knew that, but this time, with her second son Aron, she decided to follow her mother instinct and to heighten the precious connection with Aron.
Like Emily says, this finally is what probably saved her baby´s life.

In this blog I have to write about Santiago, the city where I was born and in which I have lived all my life. Despite the contamination of the capital of Chile, the smog and the polluted air, Santiago is a beautifull city, we have to use our time to know the impressive places and landscapes.
A place that I definitely recommend to visit is " El Santuario de la Naturaleza". It´s located in Los Andes mountain range, near the sky centers. The road to get there is a little danger becouse of the curves of the street, but it´s worth it. It´s a place in which the human intervention is minimal, the snowmelt runs in the slopes of the mountains forming little gaps of very cold water.
You can make a three days walk to get to a glacier, you have to go with tent and provisions.
Another place that I recommend to visit is The San Cristobal Mountain, the highest point of the city after the Renca mountain. You can get to the top in a cablecar, but I think that it´s not recomended to peolple with vertigo. Also, in this mountain is the Metropolitan zoo and two pools, calls Tupahue and Antilén.
If you want to know where our president governs, you have to go to La Moneda, in the center of Santiago. In the North is the " Constitution square" and in the South the "Citizenship square", also, inside "La Moneda" is "El patio de los naranjos", with beatiful orange trees.
If you want to go dancing or to a pub, I recommendo you " the Bellavista neighborhood", there you can find a lot of pubs, clubs and restorants for all tastes.
If you are a lover of theater, ballet and classic music, the place for you it´s the " Teatro Municipal" a beautifull building built in 1857.
I hope you visit Santiago soon!
